Aero-TV: Helicycles Aloft -- BJ Schramm's Legacy (Part Two)

Three Guys, Three Helicycles... Way Too Much Fun

Some years ago, it was my pleasure and privelege to get to know a gentle, sweet man by the name of BJ Schramm.

Uncommonly talented in all things rotary-wing related, BJ had a gift for rotors and was a truly great human being, to boot. The designer of the much lauded Rotorway heli series, it was BJ's dream to build the ultimate little single helicopter for the sport enthusiast... but to give it the kind of reliability that had not heretofore been associated with sport helicopter kits.

The Helicycle folks sum up BJ's fascination with rotorcraft, thusly, "Having flown many types of helicopters both piston and turbine powered, for over 30 years and having constructed, from scratch, over a dozen prototype helicopters from one to four seats; it was B.J. Schramm's desire to create a personal single seat helicopter which embodies all desirable features that could be engineered into a single machine."

This was near the time that the horrific death toll of a shoddily manufactured Mini-500 kit-copter was really escalating, and a known and reliable expert like BJ was just what the sport helicopter business needed to restore some respectability to an industry traumatized by alleged con-man Dennis Fetters (a.k.a. Mohammed Al Faris and God knows what other aliases he used) and the tragedies brought on by his death-trap.

That was then... and when BJ was just about done with all he could do to make the machine the best that he could, even to the point of pioneering a truly lovely turbine installation, something unfortunate happened and BJ "went home" to meet God -- who was truly the cornerstone of everything he did. Since then, family members and fans of BJ have kept the Helicycle alive and in production, while dozens are now flying safely and racking up hours right and left. The Helicycle costs less than $40K to purchase, including the Modified Solar T62 turbine 160 derated to 90 hp.

The single seat bird allows for pilots of up to 220 lbs max, a Gross Weight of 850 lbs, and an Empty Weight of 500 lbs. Fuel Capacity is 21 gallons (16 + 5 reserve). A Helicycle's range (with reserve) is 160 miles, and boasts a Rate of Climb of 900 fpm, as well as a Hover IGE of 9500 ft. The Service ceiling is 11,000 ft and the bird cruises (with doors) at approximately 95 mph, though it has a max level speed of 110 mph at Sea level. ANN caught up with three Helicycle builder/flyers at the recent Lee Bottom Fly-In... three guys of varying experience and backgrounds, who all built the same helicopter and now enjoy the occasional group flight to find a bit of adventure.

Let's let them tell you what BJ's genius and passion, via the creation of the Helicycle, means to them...

Aero-TV Tells the Tale of Three Helicycle Builder/Flyers (Part Two)!

Aero-TV: Stars in The Sky -- YAK ATTACK!! (Part 2)

A Unique And Fast Paced Formation Airshow Act -- With Triple The Fun!

The airshow industry is nothing if not varied... there seems to be more variety in this business than in most others and just about the time when you've gotten to the point when you've seen every variation of, say, formation airshow teams, along comes a solidly entertaining and quite different offering.

Such an offering is the internationally flown and flavored "Yak Attack" airshow team, featuring a triple formation airshow act utilizing either CJ-6 or Yak 52TW mounts. Yak Attack airshows is an aerial display team that came about when three highly skilled and seasoned professional aviators decided to join forces.

The team lead is Daniel Fortin. Dan is a corporate pilot who began his flying career with gliders at the young age of 16 and like many kids in Canada, Dan's dream took him to the Canadian Forces. Over the course of his career, Dan flew many different airplanes ranging from single seat gliders to heavy corporate jets while also achieving FAR 135 Check Airman status while he worked as a Simulator instructor for Flight Safety. Dan has also served as Chief pilot for the Northern Lights Acrobatic team Air Support Division where he received type ratings for high performance airplanes like the Fouga Magister, L39 Albatros and the Hawker Hunter. Dan has been a CJ6 operator since 1996 and has accumulated over 600 hrs in type. Dan is a Formation Lead and RedStar Pilots Association formation Check Pilot. After flying aerobatics for nearly 10 years, Dan finally decided to move into airshow flying in 2005. In 2006, he obtained a Transport Canada Statement of Acrobatic Competency on the CJ6 and has since performed at various airshows in Canada and USA.

Charlie Lynch Is the Right Wing (#2) Pilot, and has been flying since 1992 -- first as a helicopter pilot, and then as a fixed wing
aviator. After receiving his commercial certificate and getting his first taste of aerobatics, Charlie acquired a CJ6 in 1998 and flew it for over 1100 hours. In 2006, Charlie traded his CJ for a new Yak52TW and has been performing with this airplane since then. Charlie received his FAA Statement of Acrobatic competency in 2003 after being coached by such legends as Dan McCue and Dale Snodgrass. He now holds an FAA Statement of Acrobatic Competency for both the CJ6 and the Yak-52. Charlie first learned formation flying from the members of the now defunct Red Dragons formation team, and is now a Formation Lead/Instructor with the RedStar Pilots Association and has also lead a CJ6/Yak Mass formation during Oshkosh. Charlie holds commercial, multi-engine, Instrument and rotor wing qualifications.

Steve Dalton, flies as Left Wing (#3) and Deputy Lead. Steve is a USAF fighter pilot turned Airline Pilot. In his military career, Steve was an instructor/evaluator on the T38, F4 and F16. After leaving the USAF, Steve joined the Northrop F20 Tigershark team until the project's cancellation. He then joined Southwest airlines, where he became a regional Chief Pilot for 5 years, and has been one of their check pilots for a decade. Steve was also involved in the development of the current formation training program for the Red Star Pilot's Association (RPA), and has lead mass formations over the skies of both Lakeland and Oshkosh. Steve participates vigorously in RPA events both on the regional and national scale. Steve owns/operates the world's first Yak 52TW, is a FAST Lead, an RPA formation check pilot and holds an FAA Statement of Aerobatic Competency.

Together, these three aviators are showing the world a truly unique and exciting side of the aviation world... and we're pleased to feature them on Aero-TV.

So... Join YAK ATTACK and Aero-TV For Some High-Flying Airshow Action! (Part Two)

Aero-TV Asks... Are Airshows As Safe As They Can Be??? (Part 5)

It's Airshow Week At Aero-TV!

The last in a five part series, this week, continues with a series of interwoven interviews in which we asked about a dozen airshow professionals the same three questions... each of which was the topic of its own program over the course of the week. In this final installment, we asked a number of airshow luminaries the following question... after a year in which there were a number of tragic but unrelated accidents, are airshows as safe as they can be???

Over the last few days, we addressed the airshow industry's ability to keep up with the times and the overall safety situation we find ourselves in as 2008 gets underway in earnest.

Produced at the ICAS Convention just before the end of the year, we were pleased to be able to tackle such important subjects as the industry made ready to start another year... but we apologize for some of the lighting, as we were stuck with some bad conditions and had to make the best of it.

ICAS tells us that Airshows draw large numbers of demographically attractive spectators - a well-educated, affluent group of men, women and children of all ages. More than 70 percent of the audience at an air show has had some college education. Three quarters report household income of $35,000 or more. The average spectator is just under 39 years of age, but more than 53 percent of spectators are between 30 and 50.

Safety has always been a major airshow concern but a series of unrelated accidents, this past year, to too many performers brought the topic to the forefront of discussion at the most recent ICAS get-together. ICAS notes that Airshows offer a consistently and historically safe environment for millions of spectators each year. Since current rules were implemented nearly 50 years ago, there has not been a single spectator fatality at a North American show – an enviable safety record for any business. But... they're not satisfied to leave it that. A 'small working group' of ICAS members recently met in Dallas to begin work on a new Safety Management System for the air show industry that will serve as an important tool in improving air show safety. Using existing safety management systems as models, ICAS members discussed the changes and accommodations needed to effectively adapt the work already done in other segments of the aviation industry to the particular needs and circumstances of the air show community.

Conceived as part of the larger ICAS initiative to change the culture of air show safety, the product of this effort is intended to document processes and procedures that our industry can use to manage risk, report incidents and accidents, participate more actively in accident investigations, identify trends, communicate the results of these investigations to members, and reduce the number of accidents in the air show community.

So... On To Part Five Of Aero-TV's Conversation With The Airshow Industry

Liberty Aerospace Updates Aero-TV On The XL-2 Program

Are The Hard Times Behind Them?

To all appearances, things would seem to be looking up at Liberty Aerospace. With the recently announced availability of the Aspen EFIS system, and the announcement of a new advanced XL2 Vanguard Edition, Liberty hopes to be one of the survivors in an increasingly problematic GA market.

The latest model of the FADEC-equipped two seat touring and training aircraft offers a Gross Weight increase to 1,750 pounds, and toe-brakes, WAAS enabled Garmin GPS avionics, Jeppesen Terrain Database, and entry steps, as standard equipment.

New optional avionics include the all-digital Aspen Evolution Pro Primary Flight Display (PFD) system, Garmin GTX 330 Transponder with Traffic Avoidance, and GPS-coupled S-TEC 30 Dual Axis Autopilot. An Insight True Flow 500 Fuel Flow Computer, coupled directly to the GPS for live in-flight fuel management, is also available.

"After recently celebrating the delivery of Serial Number 100 of the Liberty XL2, we are excited to now launch this advanced model and reach another milestone in the continued development of the XL2," said Keith Markley, President and CEO of Liberty Aerospace. "The new gross weight allows a generous payload of 420 pounds with full fuel, and toe brakes will enable Flight Schools to offer more conformity in their training programs. Add WAAS-enabled GPS avionics with Traffic Avoidance for maximum utilization of our Certified IFR capability, and the FADEC equipped Vanguard XL2 pulls far away from what little competition we had in the certified two-place market."

The Vanguard model also sports a new blue-tone decal design, and the entry steps offer easier access to the cabin over the wing. Finger brakes -- often preferred by private owners for their simplicity and ease of maintenance, but increasingly rare on training aircraft -- will still be available as optional equipment.

Deliveries of the new model are expected to begin in early summer of this year.

Come join Aero-TV as we get an update on the XL-2 program from the folks at liberty Aerospace.

Aero-Maintenance Expert Provides New Management Services For Busy A/C Owners

Every now and then, someone has a "DOH!" moment... you know, a startlingly good idea that just somehow makes all the sense in the world. Mike Busch has had one, in no uncertain terms, and hundreds of aircraft owners are now eager to reap the benefits of his brainstorm. Savvy Aircraft Maintenance Management, Inc. (SAMM) is basically this -- an "in-house" maintenance expert that will be available on an annual basis for private aircraft owners... to oversee all maintenance related matters and offer their expertise, on-call, to make sure that an aircraft owner's dollars are being used only for what they are intended -- to keep their aircraft flying safely and predictably.

While he is backed up by an expert staff of maintenance pros, this is Mike Busch's baby... Mike Busch A&P/IA (CEO) is a renowned aviation writer, teacher, aviation type club tech rep, aircraft owner advocate, and entrepreneur. For nearly 20 years, Mike has been assisting aircraft owners with their maintenance problems through his work with the Cessna Pilots Association, the American Bonanza Society, and the Cirrus Owners & Pilots Association. Mike was also the FAA's “National Aviation Maintenance Technician of the Year” honoree for 2008. In other words, Mike is the real deal.

His brainchild is 'dedicated to providing professional maintenance management for owner-flown aircraft.' Services offered include:

Assist you in selecting the best service center and/or maintenance technician for the job.
Arrange for your aircraft to be ferried to and from the maintenance location (if necessary).
Establish a three-phase protocol (inspection-approval-repair) for each maintenance transaction to ensure that you stay in control of the process, have the opportunity to review and approve all maintenance decisions, remain "in the loop" throughout the process, and have no surprises when the invoice arrives.
Give specific written direction to the service centers and maintenance technicians doing the work.
Use the proven methodology of reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) to achieve the required levels of safety and dispatch reliability and the lowest possible cost.
Employ condition-directed maintenance (CDM) wherever feasible, rather than time-directed maintenance (TDM).
Implement a state-of-the-art condition-monitoring program, including regular borescope inspections, spectrographic oil analysis, and digital engine monitor data analysis.
Minimize expenditures for replacement parts by evaluating lower-cost alternatives (e.g., repairs, PMA equivalents, salvage yards, discounts).
Minimize unnecessary expense by ensuring that systematic troubleshooting is performed before authorization is given to perform repairs or replace parts.

The whole package is done for one flat fee, priced according to aircraft complexity, and starts at only $500 for a plain-vanilla Fixed Gear Single and working its way up from there. Early reports are very positive, especially among a number of Technologically Advanced Aircraft owners... and it appears that Mike has a hit on his hands.

MIT May Have The Answer To The Question About What Tomorrow's Space Travelers May Be Wearing

During the 2007 World Space Expo, ANN's Aero-TV teams came upon something that would have looked like a space suit... if only there had been more of it -- or so we thought. Upon close examination, though, we found out that this suit -- the Bio-Suit, was indeed a space suit and that in years hence (and not so many as one might imagine), this will be "unform of the day" for spacefarers.

In Ohio's Licking County, over two dozen companies have laid off workers or shut down in the past year, with 712 jobs lost in the last two months alone.

Firms like Holophane, Longaberger, Diebold and Owens Corning laid off more than 100 workers this year. A total of 1600 jobs have been lost in Licking County, which has a population of 145,000.

In the past two months, at least 712 Licking County workers lost their jobs. Most of the job losses were in manufacturing, but some came in the retail and government sectors.

The county's unemployment rate stood at 6.3 percent in October, but it could grow worse. Nine companies announced layoffs this month.

Amid some of the worst economic news in many years, maybe decades, some companies are doing well.
Licking Memorial Health Systems, State Farm Insurance and Central Ohio Aerospace and Technology Center are three examples of large entities in the area that have not been dramatically hurt by the economy.

Just a smidgeon over five years ago, ANN was literally on the edge of history... watching the XPrize-inspired Mike Melvill head out and then return from the first successful commercial spaceflight in Burt Rutan's dreamrocket. A lot has happened since then... and a whole new industry... as well as a public perception of our future in space, has resulted.

At the National Space Society's 28th annual International Space Development Conference, NSS and a very motivated group of people dedicated themselves to an in-depth look into the emerging privately funded sector of the space industry.

The space industry is undergoing an unprecedented transformation. The Space Shuttle will be retired in less than two years, resulting in the loss of thousands of jobs. Although hiring by the emerging privately funded sector of aerospace may ameliorate some of this job loss, the suspension of manned spaceflight by our civil space program for at ...
