Dazhalan, or "Big Fence ", sits just south of Tiananmen Square. The area has undergone a massive renovation to attract tourists, but some shop owners have been forced to relocate elsewhere.

Thousands packed Tiananmen Square to begin a 3 day national mourning for those who died from the earthquake in Sichuan Province on May 12th. A 3 minute silence was observed, the same length as the 7.8 temblor.
