To The Ends of The World - China Ep. 1 Preview

Author: IndieFlix Added: Tue, 26 Jun 2007 18:07:08 -0800 Duration: 124 A 10 thousand mile road trip through China

CHINA EPISODE 1 - This two part documentary tells the story of an epic 3 month road trip through China. Susan Morkel, a young South African woman, takes us through some of the most mysterious and fascinating regions in our modern world.

While some have heard of The Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square and Chairman Mao, most people actually know very little about this huge country. This first 48 minute episode takes our valiant explorer from Pakistan over the Khunjerab Pass into Kashgar in western China, through the Taklimakan Desert and on to Beijing.

Both episodes explore the remote outback of China to find stories that have never been told before. It also shows rural life and what people do there to sustain themselves. Focusing mainly on what people make with their hands, this film stays clear of the usual tourist spots. Going much further than the hazy horizon on dusty detours, this road movie will make you want to pack your bags and go there yourself.

Tiananmen Square is the largest public square in the world. Built in 1417 during the Ming Dynasty, it is where Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China in 1949. Unlike the media images from the 1989 student demonstrations, today's Tiananmen Square is filled with throngs of people holding hands, rollerblading, and celebrating life. Distributed by TubeMogul.

Massacre In Beijing's Tiananmen Square

The images are shocking. Armoured tanks plow into crowds of people, flames from burning buses light up the night sky, and bleeding bodies are rushed to hospital. For weeks student protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square have been demonstrating for political reform of China's communist government. A declaration of martial law has failed to quell the protests, and now the government has called in the military. Death is all around as the CBC's Tom Kennedy reports.

The massacre begins shortly after midnight as tanks and armoured personnel carriers roll through the streets, crushing hastily erected barricades and into Tiananmen Square. After launching tear gas and using loudspeakers to order people to leave, the army starts shooting. But the protesters fight back, beating army officers or simply standing their ground. They form human walls around foreign press to make sure the story gets out to the world. Ranked 3.82 / 5 | 6803 views | 7 comments

The Tank Man (1989 Tiananmen Square massacre)

On June 5, 1989, one day after the Chinese army's deadly crushing of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing, a single, unarmed young man stood his ground before a column of tanks on the Avenue of Eternal Peace. Captured on film and video by Western journalists, this extraordinary confrontation became an icon of the struggle for freedom around the world. Seventeen years later, veteran filmmaker Antony Thomas goes to China in search of "The Tank Man." Who was he? What was his fate? And what does he mean for a China that today has become a global economic powerhouse?
