A Mastaba was the final resting place for the pharaohs of Egypt. They were built not only for the king's needs in the afterlife, but to accommodate the visitation of members of the royal family, high officials, courtiers and functionaries. These tombs were constructed over shafts that led to a chamber containing the mummy and the offerings, but some tombs were cut into the limestone plateau and not constructed from blocks of stone.

Raising an obelisk in ancient Egypt was an amazing engineering feat. First, it had to be cut whole from solid stone and then moved to the location where it was to be erected. Upon arrival, the obelisk was hoisted with ropes up a ramp and lowered onto its base surrounded by a stone structure. Once the obelisk was in place, sand was filled in around it in order to steady and position the massive stone.

Two buildings collapsed within 24 hours of each other in Egypt last week, killing a total of 27 people. A five storey residential and commercial building collapsed in the industrial city of Damietta. The tragedy was made worse because all but one of the 22 killed were brides, relatives and friends preparing for their weddings in the beauty salon on the ground floor. Damietta specialist hospital reported a further 25 people with serious injuries.
