For more information: amputee soccer players formerly child soldiers of opposing rebel groups are held up as the new hope of Liberia. The Amputee Football Federation of Liberia has already played in international matches in Sierra Leone and Russia. Now they're gearing up to go to Turkey. Although these players win medals, they still struggle to meet their basic needs.

The decade long civil war of the 1990s in Sierra Leone created an estimated 2.1 million refugees. At least half were children, most of whom suffered appallingly high levels of atrocity and cruelty resulting in a generation with mental health trauma. Plan organises school workshops with Respect Rappers, a collective of around 30 performers, many of them ex combatants. The rappers teach children about their rights and try to inspire them to finish their studies.
