Robert Rauschenberg, the U.S. painter and sculptor who led 20th-century art across the boundaries that traditionally separated different forms of expression, has died. He was 82. Rauschenberg's pioneering work in mixed-media art was represented by famous pieces such as "Monogram" (1959), a stuffed angora goat with a rubber tire around its body standing on a canvas with collages, and "Bed" (1955), consisting of the artist's own pillow and quilt slathered with blood-red paint and wrapped around a wood support. This video shows Rauschenberg's "Cardboard and Related Pieces" exhibition at the Menil Collection in Houston in February, 2007, and "Runts" art exhibition at the PaceWildenstein Gallery in New York in January, 2008.

The significance of the work lies in the creative process as well as in the final piece itself. It involves recycling, recovery, manipulation, and the alteration of "found" objects. My works are a personal vision of self-discovery and a recognition of continual reinvention. It is the shaping of the self through the creation of art and the development of the art through self construction. Like my personal journey, the "found" objects are brought to life and also transformed. This ongoing and evolving cycle is the essence of my work.
Variations VII by John Cage

In 1966 ten New York artists and thirty engineers and scientists from Bell Telephone Laboratories collaborated on a series of innovative dance, music and theater performances, 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering, held in October at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York City. The artists were John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Öyvind Fahlström, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor and Robert Whitman. Archival material has been assembled into ten films, each of which reconstructs the artist's original work and uses interviews with the artists, engineers and performers to illuminate the artistic, technical and historical aspects of the work.

Variations VII, performed at 9 Evenings, was the next to last in John Cage’s series of indeterminate works that he had begun in 1958, which made increasing use of electronic equipment and systems. This DVD documents the only complete performance of Variations VII and also presents a stereo audio recording of the full 85 minutes of the performance.

This rare and historical film is the second in the 9 Evenings series from E.A.T. and ARTPIX and was produced by Billy Klüver and Julie Martin of E.A.T. and directed by Barbro Schultz Lundestam.
