Miff Mole and his Molers was basically a pseudonym for Red Nichols Five Pennies. They used this name when recording for the Okeh Company. Red Nichols and Miff Mole were one of the most prolific recording teams in the 1920s. Their cool, thoughtful style sometimes called the New York School or Chamber Jazz, left many Jazz critics and musicians cold, but in retrospect I think you can hear that they were on to something. In many ways they were exploring similar ideas as George Gershwin was, but in a

Red Nichols and his Five 12 Pennies performing Poor Butterfly for Brunswick in 1928. Nichols made a number of 12" "concert" recordings for Brunswick in the late '20's. He used a standard formula. He would start with some interesting dissonant chords, play straight for about 1/2 the record, followed by a vocal chorus and then finish with some really hot playing.

Red Nichols was a superb cornet player and bandleader. Between 1923 and 1934 he led a myriad of bands, and made over 4,000 records in the 1920's! Here he features as the cornet soloist in a virtuoso piece with probably the longest title I've ever seen! , accompanied by George Olsen & His Music. The record which I'm presenting here courtesy of a YouTube friend was made for Victor on June 5th, 1924.
