The U.S. government had supported Batista, a former soldier and Cuban dictator from 1933 to 1944, who seized power for a second time in a 1952 coup. After Cas

In March 1952, shortly before scheduled presidential elections in Cuba, Batista seized power through a military coup. Cuban liberals soon reacted, but a revolt in 1953 by Fidel Castro was abortive. In 1956, however, Castro landed in East Cuba and took to the Sierra Maestra, where, aided by Ernesto Che Guevara, he reformed his ranks and waged a much publicized guerrilla war. The United States withdrew military aid to Batista in 1958, and Batista finally fled on January 1, 1959.

On the morning of April 17, 1961, an army of 1,400 anti Castro Cuban exiles recruited, trained, and funded by the CIA invaded their homeland from Nicaragua and Guatemala. U.S. President John F. Kennedy, deeply disturbed by Fidel Castro's two year old Communist regime in Cuba, approved the invasion but in the last minute refused to order air support. As during the period from 1965 to 1973, when 250,000 people left Cuba for Miami in a Castro sponsored airlift, the principle destination for the refugees was the United States. Also as before, the U.S. government pledged to welcome the refugees. However, unlike the earlier period, when most refugees were middle class Cubans ideologically opposed to Cas
