Israeli missiles target Gaza

Israel has launched air strikes on Hamas installations in Gaza Strip, killing at least 120 people and causing heavy damage, according to officials and witnesses.

At least 30 missiles were fired at targets on Saturday, with the head of emergency services in Gaza saying that at least 200 people were also wounded.

Hamas and other Palestinian groups said that they have ordered their fighters to avenge the Israeli attack.

Among those killed in Israel's latest offensive was Tawfiq Jabber, the Gaza police chief.

Islam Shahwan, a Hamas police spokesman, said that the attacks destroyed most of the police headquarters in the Gaza Strip and that a police graduation ceremony was hit as it was being held in Gaza City.

The unprecedented number of simultaneous strikes were described as "massive" by the AFP news agency.

Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president and leader of Fatah, condemned the "aggression" in Gaza Ranked 3.27 / 5 | 1085 views | 11 comments

The Palestinian President has repeated his insistence that Israel must end all settlement building before he will consider rejoining peace talks. Mahmoud Abbas was speaking at a West Bank rally to mark the fifth anniversary of the death of his predecessor as Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat. His death triggered a violent power struggle within Palestinian ranks, which saw Hamas seize power in Gaza, with Abbas’ Fatah faction confined to the West Bank. Abbas has refused to stand for re-election in January, a decision which leaves the Palestinians divided and the future deeply uncertain. “We have always said that we want reconciliation, we want reconciliation because it is important for us that the people are united,” he said. “We are not happy with this split, but we do not deny the rights of others.” Arafat still casts a long shadow: he could be seen as the glue which held the Palestinian people together. The exact cause of his death has never been released – his wife refused an autopsy – and it remains to be seen if his dream of a Palestinian homeland died with him.
The deep split in Palestinian politics has forced recommendations that President Mahmoud Abbas postpones elections in January. The refusal of his bitter rival Hamas to allow the vote in its Gaza stronghold, or even to permit electoral officials to make preparations there, prompted a delay. “We met today and decided to tell the president, who called the elections, that we cannot hold them at the time he wanted them,” said the Palestinian Electoral Commission chief Hanna Nasir. Any delay would avoid a damaging, possibly permanent, split in the Palestinian movement. Abbas had already declined to stand and his replacement would have no legitimacy in Gaza. “This is only natural because of the absence of proper conditions for an election,” said Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri. “It underlines the credibility of Hamas’ position. We rejected the idea of elections before any overall agreement is reached.” Abbas has spoken of offering a “hand of friendship” to Hamas to bridge the gap between the Islamist group and his secular Fatah faction. Hamas’ reaction was to dismiss that as a “manoeuvre”.
Palestinian Crisis - VOA Story

Author: earbot Added: Tue, 19 Jun 2007 21:13:07 -0800 Duration: 322 Western nations are working quickly to support the new Palestinian government in the West Bank, following the violent takeover of the Gaza Strip by the Islamic militant group Hamas. The United States and European Union have announced they will resume financial aid to the Palestinian Authority, now that Hamas is no longer a part of the government. Middle East analysts say the current situation in the Palestinian territories is unprecedented.

The bloody takeover of the Gaza Strip by Hamas has split the Palestinian government, with the Hamas leadership in Gaza headed by deposed Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and the new Fatah-allied cabinet in the West Bank sworn in by President Mahmoud Abbas.

In announcing the resumption of direct aid to Mr. Abbas' government, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Hamas is attempting to divide the Palestinian people, a move the United States rejects.

Analysts say the division between the West Bank and Gaza has endangered the Palestinians' goal of forming an independent state in the two territories, which are located on opposite sides of Israel.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
President Abbas seeks peace with Israel while Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings, wants to destroy the Jewish state. The United States, Israel and the European Union consider Hamas to be a terrorist organization.

Robert Malley, the Director of the Middle East Program at the International Crisis Group, says the Hamas takeover of Gaza means the Palestinians have entered an extraordinary period of uncertainty.

While western nations are restoring aid to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, and are pledging more money to help the United Nations fund assistance in the Gaza Strip, fears are being raised about a possible humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which is home to about 1.4 million Palestinians.

Hamas began its rise to prominence in the late 1980s during the first Palestinian uprising against the Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza.

Following the Oslo peace accords in the early 1990s, the group's armed wing launched a campaign of suicide attacks against Israeli targets.

Early last year Hamas won Palestinian parliamentary elections, defeating the Fatah-led government, which was seen as corrupt and ineffective.

The group's popularity is partly due to its extensive network of social services, including schools, health clinics and mosques.

Following Hamas' victory at the polls, western nations cutoff aid to the Hamas-led government, and Israel froze hundreds of millions of dollars in Palestinian tax revenues.

Some analysts are expressing concern that a total boycott of Hamas could turn the Gaza Strip into a breeding ground for international terrorism.

Analysts say the United States and Israel are backing President Abbas to send the message that more is to be gained by negotiations than by violence.

The general outlines of a peace settlement between the Israelis and Palestinians have been known for years, although no significant progress has been made since the Oslo process collapsed.

Analysts say achieving a two-state solution appears more difficult than ever, now that the Palestinians are virtually split into two separate states themselves.

Author: realnews Added: Sat, 25 Aug 2007 18:10:27 -0800 Duration: 247 Mostly Fatah members receive hero's welcome in Ramallah

2007-07-20

Israel considers the release of the prisoners a gesture of goodwill towards Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement.

Fatah recognizes the Israeli state, Hamas does not. Since the collapse of the Palestinian unity government and the Hamas take over of Gaza , Israel dropped most of its embargo against the West Bank. It increased the isolation of Gaza. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said the release 'has no real value because most of the prisoners are from one faction, and most were about to be released.' The freed Palestinians traveled in buses from central Israel to the Bituniya border crossing on the West Bank. APTN captured the journey and the emotional outpouring in Ramallah.

Author: realnews Added: Sat, 25 Aug 2007 19:19:08 -0800 Duration: 125 Ultra-religious Jewish families had illegally squatted in barricaded apartments in city's market area

Tuesday August 7th, 2007

Today in Hebron, Israeli troops used sledgehammers to smash through welded doors and concrete bunkers to get at Jewish settlers who threw stones and poured oil and water on them. The settlers had claimed ownership of two houses. Dozens of settlers and soldiers were slightly injured in the melee.

Hundreds of thousands of other Israelis remain in illegal settlements in the West Bank. They were established after Israel began its occupation of the territory in 1967 following the Six Day War.

Hebron is home to about 150,000 Palestinian Muslims and Christians as well as 700 ultra-religious Israeli settlers who are often heavely armed. Prior to riots in 1929, there was a Jewish Quarter in biblical Hebron.

Twelve orthodox soldiers who had refused to take part in today's operation were earlier sentenced to 28 days in jail. The evictions came one day after the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas met for three hours in the West Bank town of Jericho.

In a deal with the Palestinian Authority, Israel agreed to evacuate 80 percent of Jewish settlers from Hebron in 1997. But Israel kept control of Hebron's market. It has been a closed military zone since 1994 when a Jewish extremist, Baruch Goldstein, shot and killed 29 Palestinians at the Tomb of the Patriarchs, sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

APTN cameras recorded today's drama as it began just after sunrise and ended about three hours later.
