Romano Prodi will remain in his post but an opinion poll suggests his grip on power will remain weak. Romans have also expressed little confidence that he will stay in office. Sonia Legg reports.

President Giorgio Napolitano, the supreme arbiter of Italian politics, will now hold talks with party leaders to discuss the way forward.
