He won 49 out of 50 before he started amateur boxing in 1976. By 1988, he had a record of 222 20. As a professional he won the IBO and WBO Heavyweight Title. Mercer won the Gold Medal in the 1988 Olympics and finished his amateur career with a record of 64 6.
